Homeschooler Semester Course in Permaculture Design & Sustainability; Jan - April, 2009
The course is intended for High School aged Homeschoolers and will run roughly in parallel with the 10-day weekend Design Course, aimed a bit more at adults, that runs from Jan 31/Feb 1 to Mar 29. Details and profiles are on www.permie.us. Parents and young adults are welcome at either course.
We are the Austin Permaculture Guild and I am the lead instructor, Dick Pierce. I have been involved in Permaculture for about 15 years - CO, NM, SD, TX, MA, and Guatemala. I have been in Austin for the last 10 years, teaching about the unique climate, growing seasons, soils, plants, rainfall/water of Central Texas via Permaculture Basics, Fundamentals, and Design Courses.
Permaculture is a term coined in the 1970's by Australians, Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, to describe the design principles they pulled together to help counter/repair the environmental degradation/destruction, wasted resources, and hunger they saw in Australia and around the world. Their principles, courses, and projects have since spread worldwide. The relevancy, acceptance, and methods of Permaculture are now growing rapidly in the US as Americans in significant numbers are realizing: that cheap, petro-based, non-renewable energy will soon be a memory; that the costs of global/national transport and resources will drive commerce toward more organic and local solutions, especially for food; and, that we can, and must, reduce consumption while maintaining/increasing joy and abundance. Permaculture lines up very, very well with the trendy terms of Green, natural, organic, and sustainable - but it also provides a structure for students to form a real base from which to do something in their lives and communities.
This 80-hour course with its 40 hours of reading and hands-on experience is a great opportunity for young people, who all want to make a contribution, who are in the process of learning/pondering the world they want to live in and the positive role/influence they will have in it. It reaches across all the disciplines of Natural Science and and touches on/introduces other aspects of community, stewardship, cooperation, well-being, local knowledge, and local business.
Information will be available shortly on www.permie.us and now by emailing DickPierceDesigns@gmail.com. It is a great opportunity for Homeschoolers for the Spring Semester and as a Christmas/Holiday present that will last a lifetime. A $100 deposit per student will reserve a space; the class is limited to 25. The location will be in Austin - the details are in process. Please consider this carefully for your High School Homeschooler and please pass this email to other Homeschoolers and Parents that you know. Thank you.
